You’re now done, and you should be able to use your PS3 controller in any game that supports Xbox 360 controllers. That’s practically every game that supports a controller, so go nuts. You can also remap the controller’s buttons to make it work in other games. RELATED: How to Remap any Controller to Keyboard Keys on Windows and MacOS. Some games don't work with PS3 controller. Using a PS3 controller on a PS4 console is not officially supported by the PS4 and so the PS3 controller will not work. This is because there are some features of PS4 games that require features that aren’t present on the Dualshock 3 controller.
Some have modded their PS3 controllers to make this work but this is not advised as it can damage your controller.
In doing my research to find the answer to this question, I realized that I had more questions including if you can use a PS4 controller on a PS3 console.
This article will aim to answer those commonly asked questions regarding PS3 and PS4 compatibility.
Do PlayStation 3 Bluetooth Remotes Work On A PS4?
You might also be wondering if a PlayStation 3 Bluetooth remote works on a PS4. If you used your PS3 Bluetooth remote to interact with Netflix on your PS3, you’ll likely want to do the same on your PS4.
Unfortunately, a PlayStation 3 Bluetooth remote is not compatible with a PS4 console and will not work.
This is regrettable, however, there are now PS4 Bluetooth remotes available to buy to accomplish the same thing as the PS3 Bluetooth remote.
These newer Bluetooth remotes can allow you to interact with Netflix on your PS4.

With that in mind, it’s a good idea to know what controllers are compatible with a PlayStation 4. That way, you can buy a new controller without having to worry about whether it will work or not.

Can I Use A PS4 Controller On A PS3 Console?
OK, so now we know you can’t use a PS3 controller on a PS4 but what about the opposite? Can you use a PS4 controller on a PS3 console?
This seems like a pretty logical question if you own both a PS4 and a PS3.
Fortunately, it is possible to use a PS4 controller on a PS3 console. If you connect your PS4 controller to your PS3 via USB there is no additional setup required.
This is excellent as it means you can minimize the time spent waiting for controllers to charge. You’ll be able to charge your PS3 controller while using your PS4 controller.

How Many Controllers Can You Connect To A PS4?
A great question regarding the PS4 is how many controllers can you connect to it? You may want to play a game with your friends or family but aren’t sure how many people can play at once.
Although some party games only require 1 controller to play, you might want to play some other couch co-op games like Borderlands 3 or Overcooked, so you’ll need some more controllers.
The PlayStation 4 can support up to 4 controllers connected at the same time. Providing a game supports couch co-op of up to 4 players, this means you and 3 other people can play a video game at once.
In fact, when you have connected 4 controllers to your PS4 you’ll see that each of them has a different colored LED to signify which player you are:
- Blue – Player 1
- Red – Player 2
- Green – Player 3
- Pink – Player 4

PlayStation fans who already purchased the PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller are reporting that the accessory is able to pair up with a variety of consoles, including the PlayStation 3, PC, and even the Nintendo Switch. However, those same reports state that the controller is unable to pair up with the PlayStation 4, thus making the current-generation console unable to recognize next-generation technology.

With the PlayStation 5's launch on the horizon, Sony has decided to release accessories for the console ahead of time, including items like the PS5 DualSense Controller and the Media Remote. In return, fans used that as an opportunity to purchase the controller for analysis, first impression reviews, breakdowns, and compatibility tests. After testing the PS5 controller with other consoles, some of the fans were surprised to find out that the controller was able to pair up with the PS3 but not the PS4, essentially meaning that it is technically possible to play PS3 games on their native console with a PS5 controller (despite having some differences due to controller design and technology like the PS button).

One possible theory that may explain why the PS3 is able to recognize the PS5 controller is due to how the PS3 was constructed. Specifically, the console has built-in compatibility with generic Bluetooth devices which allows it to recognize the PS5 controller. The PS4 on the other hand is technically able to also recognize the PS5 controller, but not receive or accept any inputs from it. For instance, trying to connect the PS5 controller to the PS4 via a USB cable does not work, while trying to connect the controller via wireless means only allows the PS4 to give users the option to register the controller but nothing else. As such, one may think that the PS4 will be out of luck altogether, but with Sony promising to support the PS4 after the PS5 releases may give fans some kind of glimmer of hope. In other words, there may be some chance for controller support at one point in the future, despite being very slim.
Despite not being able to accept the PS5 controller's connection, there is still technically a way for the PS4 to recognize the controller for now. If a user connects the PS5 controller via a USB cable to a PC or Mac device and then uses the PS4's Remote Play function, the controller will function as expected. In other words, the method can be seen as an alternative despite being a bit more complicated and requiring extra steps.
One thing that is worth noting is that once the PS5 comes out, it will be able to pair up with a PS4 controller, but only for PS4 cross-generation games via backwards compatibility. PS5 games will still require the PS5 controller, which ultimately means that it would be a good idea to keep one's PS4 controller around in case they want to play a PS4 game on their PS5, while using the PS5 controller strictly for PS5 games.
The PlayStation 5 is set to launch on November 12, 2020.
