Noteman says: Finale 2014.5 is not supported on Windows XP.

Finale components are installed to various locations on your hard drive depending on their function and required accessibility. Because there may be multiple user accounts on the same computer, Finale installs all customizable files (i.e., files that each user may want to edit individually) to a common folder. When Finale is launched, files are copied from this common location to a user-specific location for the account currently logged in.

Installing multiple versions of Finale

Because major versions of Finale are installed to different directories on your computer, you can have multiple versions installed concurrently on the same computer. Note that the most recently installed version of Finale on your computer—not necessarily the latest version—will automatically be associated with Finale file types.

When you install a new version of Finale on your computer, your settings and customized support files are not copied from the old version to the new version. Use the following checklist to ensure that everything you need is in place for a similar configuration between Finale versions.

  • Ensembles, templates, document styles, and libraries. By default, these files are located in your user folder (Configuration Files, Music Files, and Libraries).
  • Percussion MIDI maps. These files are located in your user folder (MIDI Device Annotation).
  • MIDI setup and Audio setup. These settings are controlled in their respective dialog boxes and are recorded in the Finale preferences files.
  • VST plug-in directories. If you have specified one or more non-default locations for Finale to find virtual instrument plug-ins, you must do so again for the new version of Finale.
  • Garritan sound library support files. Garritan libraries require a sound map to function correctly in Finale; these files are located in your program directory (Data). The sound map priority file is located in your user folder (Configuration Files). The support files for your Garritan library may also include a percussion MIDI map (see above).
  • Simple Entry shortcut sets and Speedy Entry key maps. These settings are stored in keymaps.txt in your user folder (Configuration Files). Additionally, if you have made any direct edits to FINALE.INI to accommodate international keyboards for Speedy Entry, these edits must be made to FINALE.INI in the new version of Finale.
  • Font annotation files. These files are located in your user folder (Font Annotation).
  • FinaleScript scripts. These files are located in your user folder (FinaleScript).
  • Third-party plug-ins. By default, these files are located in your program directory (Plug-ins). Before copying plug-ins not included with Finale from one version of Finale to another (such as the full TGTools, JW plug-ins, Patterson plug-ins, and Dolet MusicXML plug-in), it is strongly recommended to check with the plug-in manufacturer for an updated plug-in specifically designed for the version of Finale you are installing. Plug-ins that have not been updated may not function correctly in newer versions of Finale.
  • MacSymbolFonts.txt. This file is located in your user folder (Configuration Files).
  • pagesizes.txt. This file is located in your user folder (Configuration Files).
  • Finale preferences and toolbar customizations. These settings are controlled in their respective dialog boxes and are recorded in the Finale preferences files or your computer's registry. It is not recommended to copy the preferences files directly from one version of Finale to another.
  • External macro/keyboard shortcut settings. These must be adjusted for the new version of Finale using the external tool that controls them.

For the items above requiring files to be migrated, follow these steps:

  1. In Explorer, navigate to the specified location for the previous version.

For example, if you need to migrate your document styles from Finale 2012 to Finale 2014, navigate to C:Users[your account]AppDataRoamingMakeMusicFinale 2012Music FilesDocument Styles.

  2. Select the file(s) you want to migrate and choose Edit > Copy.
  3. Navigate to the same location for the new version.

For example, if you need to migrate your document styles from Finale 2012 to Finale 2014, navigate to C:Users[your account]AppDataRoamingMakeMusicFinale 2014Music FilesDocument Styles.

  4. Choose Edit > Paste. Explorer makes a copy of the file(s) from the folder for the previous version and places them in the folder for the new version.
