I can indeed see all the Windows Updates done on the evening of July 3 (remembering the problem showed up the next day).It is an option to uninstall these, although some do not have the uninstall option available, as is Microsoft's way. I'm not at that point yet.
The Windows server is a virtual machine running under KVM on the CentOS box. I mention this because we have an image of it (pre-July 3 Windows Updates) which our tech consultant has running on different hardware and it is fine, of course, being before the Windows Updates. We then applied ALL current Windows Updates to this and did NOT experience the problem, which is very curious. If we can't replicate the issue on the VM copy, then if we want to back off Windows Updates we can only do so on the production box, unfortunately.
We do have samba installed on the CentOS box, but it is not offering up file systems of any sort for mounting on other system, only the Windows Server is doing that.
I see lots of these type of entries in /var/logs/messages;
