Artboards in Adobe Illustrator are the regions of your workspace that contain printable artwork. Each document you create in Illustrator can have multiple artboards in the workspace. You define an artboard's size when you create it, but you can change the size later if necessary. For example, if you specify an artboard of 100 x100 Illustrator points, and you want to know the exact size in device-dependent pixels before exporting the file for use in an NTSC DV Widescreen, you can set the video ruler in Illustrator to use a video ruler pixel aspect ratio of 1.2 (for wide pixels) and the ruler reflects the change.

You’ve probably experienced the problem where you draw something in Illustrator and, when you are done, the artboard is way too big for the image. For convenience you need to scale down the artboard so it matches the size of your image.

Now you could go and grab the Artboard tool and start adjusting its size but there is an easier way. Start by selecting the objects on the artboard and then click the Artboard tool in the Tools panel twice. This opens up the Artboard Options Panel. From the Preset dropdown list choose Fit to Selected Art. The artboard will be instantly resized to fit the art on the artboard.

Click another tool such as the Selection tool to deselect the Artboard and you are good to go – you’ve cropped the excess artboard away from your artwork.

3. If you need to change the size of an artboard, one way is to go to the Artboards Panel. Click on the artboard you wish to change, then go to the panel menu and choose Artboard Options
4. The dialog box has fields for setting the Width and Height. If you have multiple artboards, there are also X and Y fields for setting the spacing between artboards.
5. Another way the artboard size can be adjusted is to use the Artboard Tool.
6. When the using the Artboard Tool, the Options Bar provides the same controls as the Artboard Options dialog box.
